چکیده

We examine the sets of permutations that are sorted by two passes through a stack with a D8 operation performed in between. From a characterization of these in terms of generalized excluded patterns, we prove two conjectures on their enumeration, that can be refined with the distribution of some statistics. The results are obtained by generating trees.

Sorted and or sortable permutations

In his Ph D thesis Julian West studied in depth a map that acts on permutations of the symmetric group Sn by partially sorting them through a stack The main motivation of this paper is to characterize and count the permutations of Sn which we call sorted permutations This is equivalent to counting preorders of increasing binary trees We rst nd a local characterization of sorted permutations The...

Enumerating permutations sortable by k passes through a pop-stack

In an exercise in the first volume of his famous series of books, Knuth considered sorting permutations by passing them through a stack. Many variations of this exercise have since been considered, including allowing multiple passes through the stack and using different data structures. We are concerned with a variation using pop-stacks that was introduced byAvis andNewborn in 1981. Let Pk(x) b...

Methods of computing deque sortable permutations given complete and incomplete information

The problem of determining which permutations can be sorted using certain switchyard networks is a venerable problem in computer science dating back to Knuth in 1968. In this work, we are interested in permutations which are sortable on a double-ended queue (called a deque), or on two parallel stacks. In 1982, Rosenstiehl and Tarjan presented an O (n) algorithm for testing whether a given permu...

Stack Sorting, Trees, and Pattern Avoidance

The subject of pattern avoiding permutations has its roots in computer science, namely in the problem of sorting a permutation through a stack. A formula for the number of permutations of length n that can be sorted by passing it twice through a stack (where the letters on the stack have to be in increasing order) was conjectured by West, and later proved by Zeilberger. Goulden and West found a...

A Stack and a Pop Stack in Series

We study sorting machines consisting of a stack and a pop stack in series, with or without a queue between them. While there are, a priori, four such machines, only two are essentially different: a pop stack followed directly by a stack, and a pop stack followed by a queue and then by a stack. In the former case, we obtain complete answers for the basis and enumeration of the sortable permutati...
